A focoid in its natural form is three spherical transparent gelatinous bodies in very close proximity that is hard as steel. It can shape its body into various shapes if it wishes; one of its most common shapes is that of a lens nine feet in diameter.
Combat: A focoid's mouth is not nearly as effect for combat as is its heat ray is. For this reason the focoid will use it heat ray to kill a critter first then start munching on it. Since a focoid requires the use of a nearby fire-body to make use of its heat ray it is very rarely seen away from such celestial bodies.
Gelatinous Body (Ex): The immune to poison, sleep, paralysis, stunning, and polymorphing. Not subject to critical hits.
Heat Ray (Ex): The focoid has the unique ability to shape its body into three lens. When shaped as such it has the ability to focus heat and light from nearby fire-body into a deadly heat ray. Each ray deals 1d12 points of damage, and the focoid can make three ray attacks per round, each heat ray may be directed at one target or each at different targets. The range increment of the heat ray is 750 ft.
Transparent (Ex): A focoid is transparent nearly all the time (about the only time it can be seen is for 12 hours just after it has feed). It transparency makes it hard to spot, DC 20, those who fail to spot it are treated as if trying to hit an invisible opponent with all the penalties for such effort (i.e., 50% miss chance). When making spot checks to see the focoid keep in mind range modifiers!
In the Spheres Focoids are a severe navigational hazard that are known to roast crews of spelljamming ships and causing ships rigging and decks to catch on fire. Many port of calls offer up to 500-gp bounty per focoid. Focoids do not have any advancement, when they get larger they simply divide and a second focoid is born.
After focoid has killed its prey it allows the natural gravity of the nearby star to draw the remains of the prey to it so it can chew upon it. As such it is rarely found more then 2,000 feet from the fire-body it has staked out as its home. They kill only for food, never for malice.
