Jupiter is an air world of toxic gas. Just coming in contact with the skin causes mino burning to occur (1d4 points/round). When entering the atmosphere with a spelljammer ship it takes 4+1d4 rounds for the air envelope to become complety toxic. In any case you must replenish the air supply to clean it out once you leave (If you leave)! If you breath it in you must save vs poison at -4 or die. Many ships have entered the air world and have never come out. They drift around with the dead bodies lying in their last resting spot. Once in a while one will drift to the surface where it can be seen for a short time then sink down into the gasous depths again.

Recently reports have spoken of a ship has been attacking ships that get too close to the planet. The ship is piloted by an undead mage. All the rest of the crew are regular zombies except that they can breath a gas cloud from their lungs onto opponents. This causes 1d4 damage and the victim to save vs poison (normal) or die. They then take the ships and bodies back to the gas planet and eat the remains.

Located within the atmosphere of the planet are evil air (gas) elementals. They can't leave the gas itself but once in a while they can cause a gas flare to shoot from the surface of the planet to strike at a ship passing by. The flare will engulf the ship and foul the air. It also allows the elementals to quickly grab at sailors on the deck and pull them back into the planet.

Why would anyone go near a planet that is this dangerous? Because the swirling colors and beautiful patterns its creates are bested only by Saturn. Also found just under the surface no more than 10' are a type of air fish that swim about in the air currents. When properly prepared (some of the locals know how) the fish are a natural aging preventative. If eaten on a daily basis your life span will be lengthened. There is no known way of preserving the fish (even with magic). Thus you would have to live locally to get the benefit of the fish! The fisherman wear protective suits to limit the exposure, but usually die at a young age.

One of the most distinguishing features of Jupiter is the "Red Spot," which appears as a huge, swirling storm-like formation in the southern hemisphere. The area under this spot isn't toxic like the rest of the planet, due to a stable vortex with the elemental plane of air. It is the continual contact between the atmosphere of Jupiter and the stable air pocket that create and maintain the Red Spot.

A small earth world (size B) exists inside this oaisis. Traveling to this world required going through a thin layer of corrosive gas the covers the red spot. The process only takes a few rounds (1-4), as this layer of gas is quite thin, but during this period the ship is vulnerable to the effects of the atmosphere and from attack but the gas elementals. For this reason, people who make regular trips to the earth world tend to favor illithid ships or triops, as those designs don't require crew members to be exposed to the outside.

The small planet is actually quite ordinary in appearance. It is volcanic, with numerous hot springs, so the climate is largely temperate and hospitable to most races. Small groups of humans and demi-humans can be found there, but none of them have spelljamming technology. In fact, the isolation has caused these societies to regress to a nomadic, stone-age culture.

The planet wouldn't be worth mentioning were it not for the stable veins of mitheral it holds. Dwarves from the Jovian Federation maintain mining operations here, while humans carry the raw mitheral to Io using nautiloids and triops. There is reason to believe that the elemental vortex that makes the traped planet inhabitable is connected to the geology of the earth world, and that the continual mining of mitheral may one day close this vortex. It is because of this very real threat that most would-be colonizers stay clear of the isolated world below the Red Spot.

Plot Hooks

  • Recently a nobel from the planet Terra was stupid enough to travel too close while viewing the patterns and was lost. A reward has been put out for the body's recovery. He was last wearing a gold necklace of some worth that was shaped like a buring sun (make magical if you want).

Satellites

Metis

(aka Nederance)

The closest moon to Jupiter. It is basically a dead planet. Centuries ago the evil air elementals from jupiter wanted to expand their world, and thus created a giant gas flare that reached out to the closest planet. The Flare engulfed the planet and the gases quickly killed all that lived there, including all plant life. The problem was that the air elementals could not keep the flare up. Soon after the flare was established many of the elementals flew to the planet. The reduction of the elementals channeling the flare caused the flare to collapse. Many of the elementals died as they were lost in wild space without their gases. Many were also trapped on the moons surface without any way to get back to their home world. After centuries most of the toxic gases on the surface were leaked off into the wild space, but many sink holes and underground caves and complexes left by the previous moon occupants are still filled with the toxic gases. Many treasures lie in these underground caverns. Some other creatures have also settled on the moons surface now that most of the gases have settled off. There is a breathable atmosphere, but all actions are at -1 unless some form of breathing apparatus is used.

Io

Io is a geologically active place, and at a first glance it looks like a dead world. This is hardly the case. Io is inhabited primarily by dwarves, who take advantage of the geological activity for mining and manufacturing. In Terraspace, Io is second only to Mercury in dwarven industrial activity.

Other races, primarily humans and halflings, also maintain settlements on Io, often acting as merchants and middlemen for the various dwarven companies. In the past, Io's major industry was mining, but as the mines have started to play out, the dwarves have shifted their attention to manufacturing. Tools, weapons, jewelry, and a variety of other finished products are manufactured on Io, where they are often taken to Europa for sale. Io is sometimes referred to as the Jovian Federation's "workshop." There is a continual stream of traffic to Io. Raw materials from the asteroid belt are brought in on a regular basis. During those times of the year when Jupiter and Saturn are in close proximity - about every 12 standard years - there is an added influx of materials mined from Saturn's rings. During these periods, Io's goes into a brief economic boom, which can cause some problems on the local market. The effects never last more than a few months.

Sadly, the space around Io is a magnet for pirates who are either looking for unprocessed ore, or better yet, finished products. The dwarves themselves do not maintain a fleet of spelljammers, but they can rely on the Federation government to keep the space lanes clear. Federation hammerships and battle-dolphins are a common sight. Any ship approaching Io will be stopped and questioned, but will only be turned away if they look hostile. Independent merchants are a frequent sight in and around Io's two major space ports.

Io enjoys a strong and mutually beneficial partnership with the other worlds of the Jovian Federation. Where Europa is one of the Federation's primary producers of agricultural goods, Io is the largest producer of manufactured goods. The dwarves put a lot of time, effort, and pride into their wares. Goods produced on Io will generally be of the highest quality with the appropriate levels of reliability, durability, and of course, price. The dwarves and their associates tend to live in the mountainous regions of the moon. Most of the moon is a flat plain, however. These flat areas are sometimes the base for wildcats who hope to tap some of Io's geological resources. Tiny "boom" towns can be found, and most of them tend to be rough and dangerous. Let the visitor beware.

Europa

A lush garden world with with heavy forests and a few mountain ranges that pop up from beneth the tree canopy. Many private communities exist below the trees some have even cleared out area for the landing of spelljammer ships. The largest is a space port nestled into the side of some high mountains. They maintain a rescue ship that cane race to the planet below to try to save anyone who may accidently entered the planet. Several Arcane are known to reside here. Almost any arcane device can be bought here also. The arcane have a hidden base deep inside of Jupiter that is protected by a large bubble(see above). Eurosa is the large space port on Europa located on the side of a mountain range that extends above the lush forest. They have several dry docks that allow for landing. The city is built into the side of the mountain and extends down to the forest floor. On the floor there is a large lake that allows water landing vessels to land.

Travelin Whale Tours: Based in the space port of Eorosa. Travlin Whale Tours is a tour company very much like the Carnival Cruise lines. They currently have two whale ships that have been modified for carrying passengers. The first of the two is "Space Wanderer" which takes weekend tours to and from Jupiter. The second is the more plush of the two called the "Royal Princess" and it takes monthly tours, roaming all of Terraspace. The current owner, a Half-Elf named Ramour usually accompanies the Royal Princess. Each Whale ship is equiped with two viper ships that act as transports between the whale ships and the planets. They also provide excellent transport down into the red spot and the city below. The whale ships never dock, but instead stay in wild space, using the Viper ships to transport passengers. Very often rich royalty ride on the Royal Princess. Each ship has two indoor pools, several casinos and many bars. The Space Wanderer can carry 400 people while the Royal Princess is limited to 250 people. Activities can include Skeet shooting (crossbows), to fishing from the vipers on the surface of Jupiter.
