The Manship is a one-person construction device. It is little more than a large box with two grappling arms on it. Its power source, the Manhelm, is built into the box, and the pilot sits on an external seat. The helm allows anyone sitting in the pilot's seat to fly the ship at an SR of 2 (tactical speed only), regardless of class or skill of the pilot. The helm also allows the 2 grappling arms to be animated by the helmsman.
These arms, which have an effective strength of 18, are normally used to carry items about in a space dock or construction facility. They have shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, allowing a remarkable degree of manipulation of carried objects. Optional tools may also be mounted on the ends of the arms' hands. If used in combat, the arms can punch for 2d6 hit points of damage (0-1 hull points of damage) or grapple with 18 strength.
The Manhelm is designed for this type of ship; if it is removed from a Manship (and is not damaged in the process, since it saves as thick wood) and used on another, it only can move a ship of up to 2 tons at 2 SR (tactical speed only), and the grappling control is nonexistant.
The pilot is normally strapped onto the ship, in order to prevent falls from sudden changes in gravity planes. Since the grapple-arms are controlled mentally, the pilot's hands are free; many pilots carry a weapon such as a crossbow for personal defense since they require little arm room. Note that hand-held items and the grapple arms cannot be used simultaneously.
